RIM 3Q Earnings Soar

Research in Motion’s fiscal third-quarter profit more than doubled on strong demand for its BlackBerry smart phones by consumers and businesses. The company’s shares jumped more than 11 percent in after hours. For the quarter ended Dec. 1, Canada-based RIM earned $370.5 million, or 65 cents per share, compared with $175.2 million, or 31 cents per share, in the same quarter last year.

The company’s third-quarter revenue rose to $1.67 billion from $835.1 million last year.
